Boone’s Lovill House Inn: A Cozy Winter Haven in WNC
As an Appalachian State University parent, I make the drive to Boone, NC, several times a year. I’ve noticed on my visits that many of the town’s hotels – chains or otherwise – are located along highways and rather pricey. This January, I was fortunate to stay at the historic and eco-conscious Lovill House Inn, thanks to its special winter rates.
Nestled just outside of downtown on 11 acres of peaceful forestland, the high-end bed and breakfast (B&B) transforms into a winter wonderland, with a pretty creek, waterfall, hiking trails, and deer tracks dotting the snow. A rustic barn and other charming structures punctuate the scenic grounds.
The inn was originally built in 1875 as a private home for Captain Edward Lovill and holds historic significance – including as the location where the charter for App State was written in 1903.
Solar energy and storage systems were added to the property in 2021, ensuring the power stayed on even when Hurricane Helene knocked out the region’s electricity in September 2024. The B&B pours local coffee and sources mostly local and organic ingredients for breakfast. Non-toxic toiletries are provided in refillable containers, and complimentary filtered water is provided in glass bottles. The inn’s art is a delightful combination of paintings by local artists, some of which are for sale, and photos of the owners’ agrivoltaic sheep farm in Eastern NC.
The Avery Suite is my favorite for solo travelers (it also accommodates two), especially for those of us who like a desk. It features a private door to outside yet stays cozy warm. The property also features larger suites, a cabin, and special event bookings.
Lovill House is a lovely place to stay in Boone if you prefer healthy and nature-based stays that are locally owned and managed.
